Chanel Flap Bag
One item will always stand out a little more: the Chanel Flap Bag. This bag is often referred to as the Chanel 2.55 or the Chanel Classic Flap Bag.
As a brand Chanel always stood for comfortability, so Coco decided to create a bag that would allow women to keep their hands free. This was the first time they could carry their bags on their shoulder. This bag was named the Chanel 2.55, and was named after the production date: February, 1955.
This original 2.55 has been redesigned multiple times over the years, but the redesign in 1983 is most important to understand the difference between the 2.55 and the Chanel Classic Flap Bag. Karl Lagerfeld changed the classic square twisting lock of the 2.55, to the iconic interlocking CC clasp. This was the beginning of the Chanel Classic Flap Bag.
A Chanel Classic Flap Bag always refers to the Flap Bags with the interlocking CC lock and a leather-woven chain, while the name 2.55 specifically refers to the original Flap Bag design with the Mademoiselle lock and a metal chain.
Exterior and interior
Both bags are square or rectangle shaped, and can be closed with a flap and lock. Most flap bags will have a double flap; however, some sizes and shapes are only available with a single flap. There are two different compartments, the main compartment has three slip-in pockets: two small, and one bigger pocket.
The flap of the bag has a small inner pocket that can be closed with a zipper. Coco Chanel used this pocket to store secret love letters. Second, in between the two internal pockets, there is a space designed to hold a single lipstick. And third, on the outside of the bag there is a slip-in pocket specifically designed to securely hold money without having to open the bag.
The Chanel Flap Bags are available in many different types of leather and materials, Originally, the Flap Bag was crafted using quilted Lambskin Leather. Another common leather is Caviar leather. Both of these classic leathers are available in a great variety of colors.
There are also less-common materials available: cotton, transparent plastic, tweed, or even some exotic leathers are to be found.
Contrary to what many people believe, the number 2.55 has nothing to do with the size of the bag. Instead there is a three-digit code added to the name to indicate the size. 2.55 was made in 5 sizes, but in 2008 size 228 was taken out of production.
Classic Flap Bag
Over the years, several sizes of the Classic Flap Bag have been designed: Mini (16.5 x 14 x 6.5 CM), Small (24 x 14.5 x 6.5 CM), Medium (25.5 x 16 x 7.5 CM), Jumbo (30 x 20 x 10 CM) and Maxi (33 x 23 x 10 CM).
